Public Speaking – Use the Summertime to Prepare a Speech to Market Your Business in 9 Easy Steps
Public speaking is one of the most powerful ways to market your small or home-based business. Savvy entrepreneurs everywhere realize the power of a well-crafted presentation to get them more prospects, more clients, and more referrals. If you have considered writing a speech to market your business, take advantage of the lull of the summer months to create what I call your own “Signature Speech” that you can deliver to groups of your ideal target market in your community or around the world via teleconference or webinars.
Here are 9 steps to get started with using a speech to market your business and be successful with this powerful marketing technique:
Step 1. Determine your topic: Consider what those in your target market, audience or niche most want to know more about.
Step 2. Do some research: You may only have to go as far as your own bookshelf for details to add to your Signature Speech. You’ll need to want to pack your presentation full of useful information to share with your future audiences.
Step 3. Organize your speech: Start with a compelling attention-getter and lead your audience through your speech in a logical progression. One method is to share some problems people you work with typically face and offer a variety of possible solutions — in addition to working with you.
Step 4. Offer something for free: You want to be able to make contact with your audience in the future. So offer a free report, e-course, resource list, or follow-up action guide that you will send via email in order to collect the contact details of your audience members. Make sure they know you will stay in touch with them and how to unsubscribe if they no longer want or need your information.
Step 5. Get scheduled: As you are preparing your speech, summer is the perfect time to connect with event and meeting planners to get on their fall and winter schedules. Tell them your topic and the top three things the audience will learn, get or experience as a result of your talk.
Step 6: Practice. A lot. Present your speech — out loud (not in your head!) from beginning to end. Time yourself so you know exactly how long your speech will take to complete. Meeting planners will tell you how long your allotted time is. Do not go over or under that time by more than 1-2 minutes.
Step 7: Give the speech: Go to the event polished and prepared, feeling comfortable and confident you have something of value to share– because you do!
Step 8: Follow up: Send what you promised you’d send right away. Ask for referrals and offer a product or service in your follow-up communication.
Step 9: Keep in touch: Effective, regular and consistent communication is what will keep you top of mind and provide you with the most opportunities to generate sales down the line. Make sure your contact contains more useful information such as resources, discounts, articles, insider secrets, or other details people like to receive.
Summer is the perfect time to develop your speech and use the time when others are on vacation to prepare, practice and get booked for the upcoming busy fall season. When you do, you’ll soon experience the power of public speaking.
